I have 20 years’ experience and proven abilities in managing operation, commissioning, projects and maintenance of building, hotels and manufacturing. My experience in the field of oil & gas and building services encompasses senior roles at a number of organizations in the Philippines, South Korea and the UAE.

I started my career in 1994 as Cadet Engineer for Installation, Testing and Commissioning of Security Systems, CCTV Cameras, Burglar Alarm, BGM Pipe in Music, Fire Alarm System, Detectors and Sprinkler. Later in 1999, I was lucky to enhance my troubleshooting and design experience as the head of the Maintenance Department in manufacturing from the Philippines till 2003. Work in the field of Oil & Gas sector as Commissioning Engineer from 2004 till 2008 both in onshore and offshore.

In 2009, I was appointed as Commissioning Engineer to start my path in building services handling both Electrical and Mechanical Commissioning for some projects in the UAE. Become Commissioning Manager in 2012 and successfully handed over notable projects in GCC region. Becoming Operations Manager in 2014 and now also at Sutton Commissioning & Management Consultancy.

I finished my Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering in 2017 at Martinville University in USA, an Associate Member of Commissioning Specialist Association, A member of International Association of Electrical Inspector in USA, Certified ISO Auditor, LEED Accredited and GCC CSA Committee Member.

Expert Guidance

Q: What tips can you recommend for someone that you’d only share with a close friend (and everyone reading this these insights)?

There is always the question of what trends, systems or products have affected changes of life safety systems? I always say this, the increasing use of very early smoke-detection apparatus systems has changed the focus of the fire systems in data centres from personnel evacuation to fire prevention and equipment protection. Being able to detect minute amounts of smoke allows the time to investigate and shut down malfunctioning equipment before a fire occurs. This increased sensitivity presents a challenge for testing and commissioning to be able to simulate a very low level of nonvisible smoke.

Commissioning common Pitfalls or Problems

 Q: What are three hard-to-spot pitfalls that are critical to avoid?

The most common pitfalls I see on projects are:

  1. When the consultant asking for flowrate on PICV, instead of verifying the pressure drop.
  2. Starting the commissioning process even though the installation is not approved.
  3. Commissioning Team appointed by the MEP or Main Contractor, instead of by the Client.


Commissioning Predictions

Q: Looking out 3 to 5 years, beyond the obvious trends, what do you think will be the next big change in your industry

  1. The impact of green building requirements require more services with respect to testing and commissioning
  2. The commissioning documentation will increase than what we normally use now because of increased regulatory requirements.
  3. Obviously, the price of every project is getting cheaper because of those so-called “Micky Mouse” commissioning companies.


On the lighter side – Commissioning Mishaps

 Q: Can you share a personal short event or mishap (commissioning or management related) you can think of that still makes you laugh to this day (maybe not at the time)?

I have a lot of that experience, but what I can share is when I was the Commissioning Manager in an Abu Dhabi project, there were 4 commissioning companies working under me. I was surprised to find one of commissioning engineers come to me and complain he has design issue in the chilled water system. He was complaining that the pump is not correct because the nameplate stated 1000GPM, whilst the design flow is 63 L/S? This isn’t a conversation I ever expected to have with an Engineer!
